1. Upgrade an Older Minn Kota PowerDrive V1

Owners of older PowerDrive V1 trolling motors may discover that their original control board or foot pedal is discontinued. That doesn’t necessarily mean the entire trolling motor needs to be replaced.

Lakeside Marine & Service offers PowerDrive V1 conversion kits that allow compatible older motors to use newer V2-style control components.

Example pedal-and-control-board configuration. Components vary by selected kit.

Why upgrade a PowerDrive V1?

  • Replace certain discontinued original control boards.
  • Replace an unavailable or failed V1 foot pedal with a compatible newer control arrangement.
  • Access newer control options depending on the selected kit.
  • Add Advanced GPS Navigation to eligible older motors.
  • Extend the useful life of a functioning trolling motor.

Which discontinued V1 control boards can be addressed?

Our V1 conversion listing identifies these older part numbers:

  • 12V control boards: 2304043, 2304004, 2304014, 2304041.
  • 24V control boards: 2304045, 2304042, 2304044.
  • Older foot pedals: 2774700, 1866040, 2994700.

These are listed applications for the conversion family, not a claim that every kit configuration is interchangeable.

Will my original V1 foot pedal still work?

No. The original PowerDrive V1 foot pedal is not compatible with the newer V2-style control board used in the conversion. If you want to continue using foot-pedal control, select a compatible replacement pedal and control configuration.

2. Add Advanced GPS and Spot-Lock to Your PowerDrive

Important: Upgrading your Minn Kota PowerDrive to Advanced GPS Navigation means you will lose foot-pedal functionality. Your existing PowerDrive foot pedal will no longer operate the motor. Control the motor using the Minn Kota App, a compatible Advanced GPS remote, or a compatible connected fish finder.

One of the most useful upgrades for compatible Minn Kota PowerDrive motors is Advanced GPS Navigation. Choose the 2007–2016 upgrade kit or 2017–present upgrade kit based on your verified motor information. Rather than manually correcting your position throughout the day, Advanced GPS can provide GPS anchoring and automated navigation features.

What features does Advanced GPS provide?

Depending on the controls and connected equipment, Advanced GPS Navigation offers:

  • Spot-Lock: GPS anchoring to help hold your boat in position.
  • Advanced AutoPilot: GPS-assisted heading control.
  • Drift Mode: Maintain a controlled drift path and speed.
  • iTracks: Record and retrace trolling paths.
  • Routes: Navigate between saved locations with compatible connected equipment.
  • Minn Kota App: Control supported features using a compatible smartphone.
  • Humminbird integration: Access additional navigation functions through compatible networked fish finders.

Some features require a full-size remote, compatible Humminbird fish finder, mapping, or additional accessories. Not every feature is available through every control method. Routes and certain other navigation functions are initiated through compatible Humminbird equipment.

The app can also be used alongside a compatible wireless remote. Compare remote configurations in the 2007–2016 kit listing or the 2017–present kit listing.

Do I need a Minn Kota heading sensor?

The Minn Kota Bluetooth heading sensor supplies the trolling motor with the direction the boat is pointing. This boat-heading information is different from the GPS position used to hold a Spot-Lock location. The sensor does not add basic Spot-Lock; the compatible Advanced GPS system already provides GPS anchoring.

Spot-Lock Jog and Boat-Relative Direction

On compatible PowerDrive Advanced GPS installations, a paired and calibrated heading sensor enables Spot-Lock Jog. Jog moves your existing Spot-Lock location in five-foot increments forward, backward, left, or right. The boat-heading information lets the system interpret those directions relative to the boat rather than requiring you to steer manually to a new anchoring position.

Heading Sensor Calibration and Heading Offset

The sensor also has its own heading calibration and offset setup, accessible through compatible full-size remote or Minn Kota App controls. Heading Sensor Calibration is performed on the water after installation and pairing, with the boat driven through two complete circles as directed by the instructions.

Heading Offset compensates for the difference between the sensor's mounted direction and the boat's keel or forward direction. Complete calibration first, then set the offset with the trolling motor pointed forward and parallel to the keel, following the instructions for your system. This aligns the sensor's heading reference correctly; it is not a substitute for changing navigation headings with the steering controls.

Installation and Compatibility

The external sensor must be mounted away from magnetic interference, connected to power, paired with the trolling motor, and calibrated before use. Review Minn Kota's heading sensor installation, pairing, calibration, and offset instructions for the complete procedure.

Some motors already have a compatible sensor, so check before buying another. The heading sensor is not included with the base Advanced GPS upgrade kits and is sold separately. The heading sensor does not improve Spot-Lock accuracy and is not required for Spot-Lock to work.

Shop the Minn Kota Heading Sensor.

Can Advanced GPS connect to a Humminbird fish finder?

Yes, with compatible Humminbird equipment and the correct networking accessories. Depending on the fish finder and installation, you may need an Ethernet cable and an additional adapter. Certain navigation functions also require compatible mapping. Confirm the exact Humminbird model and networking requirements before purchasing cables.

3. Upgrade a Minn Kota PowerDrive From 12V to 24V

If your existing PowerDrive motor has enough functionality but lacks the thrust you need, a voltage and thrust conversion may be worth considering. Lakeside Marine & Service offers the PD1224 PowerDrive conversion kit for eligible 12V, 50–55 lb thrust motors. This kit converts the motor to a 24V, 70 lb thrust configuration.

Minn Kota PD1224 conversion kit components including control board, armature, center housing, brushes, seals, hardware and propeller
PD1224 conversion components. The upgrade requires internal motor and control changes, not just a different battery supply.

What are the benefits of converting to 24V?

  • Increased thrust for heavier boats or demanding conditions.
  • Improved ability to handle wind and current.
  • Greater operating capability with a properly configured 24V battery system.
  • The ability to retain compatible portions of your existing trolling motor.

Actual runtime depends on battery capacity, boat load, operating speed, conditions, and installation.

What components are included?

The PD1224 product listing includes:

  • One 2884056 Minn Kota 24V control board.
  • One 92-100-128 70 lb armature assembly.
  • One 9-738-038 70 lb brush plate assembly.
  • One 2888460 seal and O-ring kit for the 3-5/8-inch lower unit.
  • Two 975-042 torsion springs.
  • Two 188-038 70 lb brush assemblies.
  • Two 830-007 screws.
  • One 92-200-005 3-5/8-inch center housing.
  • One MKP-32 Weedless Wedge 2 propeller, listed with numbers 2091160, 1865017 and 1378131.
  • One 830-008 lower-unit through-bolt two-pack.
  • Lower-unit washer kit: two 990-070, one 990-067 and one 788-015.

This is a substantial motor conversion, not simply a control board replacement.

Can I connect 24V to my existing 12V PowerDrive?

No. Connecting 24V to your existing 12V PowerDrive without completing the conversion will fry the control board, steering motor and lower-unit components. Do not connect a 24V battery supply until the appropriate motor and control components have been installed and the conversion is complete.

A suitable 24V battery arrangement, wiring, overcurrent protection, and charger configuration must also be considered. Installation should follow applicable Minn Kota instructions and appropriate marine electrical practices.

Frequently Asked Questions About Minn Kota PowerDrive Upgrades

Can an older Minn Kota PowerDrive V1 be upgraded?

Yes. Certain older PowerDrive V1 motors can be converted to newer control arrangements using compatible V1 upgrade kits. Available options depend on the original motor’s voltage, control board, and foot-pedal configuration.

Can I add Spot-Lock to my existing PowerDrive?

Many compatible PowerDrive motors can be upgraded to Advanced GPS Navigation with Spot-Lock using the 2007–2016 kit or 2017–present kit. The correct upgrade depends on the motor’s generation and exact model. Older V1 motors may require additional conversion components.

Will my PowerDrive foot pedal still work after upgrading to Advanced GPS?

No. The PowerDrive Advanced GPS upgrades discussed in this guide do not retain foot-pedal functionality. Choose your preferred control option when ordering the 2007–2016 kit or 2017–present kit.

What is the difference between the 2007–2016 and 2017–present Advanced GPS upgrade kits?

The 2007–2016 kit and 2017–present kit are intended for different PowerDrive generations. Both offer Advanced GPS capabilities, but the required head-controller configuration and compatibility differ. The 2007–2016 upgrade also involves replacing the control board using quick-connect electrical connections. Select the kit based on your verified motor information, not appearance alone.

Do I need to purchase a wireless remote?

Not necessarily. The Advanced GPS kits offer a no-remote option that uses the Minn Kota App on a compatible smartphone or compatible connected fish finder. Micro and full-size wireless remotes are available for customers who prefer dedicated controls.

Does the Advanced GPS upgrade include a heading sensor?

No. The heading sensor is an optional accessory sold separately. It supplies boat-heading information for Spot-Lock Jog on compatible installations, with calibration and heading-offset setup through compatible remote or Minn Kota App controls. The heading sensor does not improve Spot-Lock accuracy and is not required for Spot-Lock to work.

Can I convert my 12V PowerDrive to 24V?

Certain 2001–present, 12V, 50–55 lb thrust PowerDrive motors are candidates for the PD1224 conversion to 24V and 70 lb thrust. Compatibility must be verified before ordering, and the conversion requires appropriate internal components and a properly configured 24V electrical system.

Do I need new batteries and a different charger when upgrading from 12V to 24V?

For a two-battery setup, we always recommend batteries of the same age and size. If your existing 12V battery is old, we recommend replacing it and adding a second matching 12V battery for the 24V system rather than pairing an old battery with a new one. A single compatible 24V lithium battery is another option.

If you have only a single-bank charger, or your existing multi-bank charger has no unused bank available, you will need another charger for the additional battery or a suitable replacement charger with enough banks. Whichever battery arrangement you choose, use charging equipment compatible with the battery voltage and chemistry, including a compatible charger for a single 24V lithium battery.

Will converting my PowerDrive to 24V automatically double my runtime?

No. Runtime depends on battery energy capacity, motor power demand, boat load, operating speed, and conditions. A 24V conversion may improve performance, but it does not guarantee a specific runtime increase.

Is it better to upgrade my PowerDrive or buy a new trolling motor?

Upgrading can make sense when the existing motor is in good mechanical condition and a compatible kit provides the features you want. Replacement may be preferable if the motor has significant mechanical wear, corrosion, or multiple expensive failures. Compare the complete installed upgrade cost with the price and features of a replacement motor.
