On Minn Kota cable-steer foot pedals that use a magnetic reed switch, the momentary button activates the switch using a small rod magnet on its underside. If the propeller will not turn on when you press the button, the reed switch may be too far from the magnet. If the propeller will not turn off when you release the button, the switch may be too close to the magnet.
The reed switch is a small black plastic cylinder with two wires attached. It should sit approximately 1/32 inch below the rim of its retaining clip. This procedure applies to pedals with this reed-switch arrangement, not every Minn Kota foot pedal. Confirm your model and serial number before using it.
Someone who is mechanically inclined and comfortable working on the pedal can perform these checks using the correct tools and safe work practices. Disconnect battery power before removing the button, adjusting the switch, or handling wiring. If the propeller will not stop when the button is released, disconnect power before inspecting the pedal. Contact us if any step is outside your experience.
Check and adjust the reed-switch position
- With battery power disconnected, push the heel of the pedal all the way down and remove the momentary button.
- Locate the reed switch inside its retaining clip. From underneath the pedal, identify the two wires leading to the switch.
- Gently push the switch upward into the opening. Using a flat-ended tool, such as the flat end of a pen, carefully push it back down until it sits approximately 1/32 inch below the rim of the clip.
- Reinstall the momentary button before restoring power. With the foot pedal set to Momentary, test that the propeller turns on when the button is pressed and turns off when it is released. Keep clear of the propeller and follow the operating instructions for your motor.
- If it still does not operate correctly, disconnect battery power again and verify the switch position. Inspect the underside of the momentary button to confirm that the small rod magnet is still in place.
If the button’s magnet is missing
Replace the matching push-button/magnet assembly and retest for proper operation. Match the button shape and confirm serial-number compatibility before ordering.
If the switch position and magnet are correct
If the reed switch is correctly seated, the magnet is present and moves close to the switch when the button is pressed, but the motor still will not run, the supplied troubleshooting procedure identifies the reed switch as the replacement component. See the 2884019 — Minn Kota Magnetic Reed Kit. Confirm compatibility with your motor and control board before ordering, then retest for proper operation after replacement.
